When you think of Zambales, you probably picture crashing waves, surfing lessons, and sandy toes. But hidden away in the town of San Marcelino lies a different kind of magic—a serene, freshwater haven that locals have dubbed the New Zealand of Zambales. Welcome to **Lake Mapanuepe**.
Just a scenic drive from Luna & Sol Beach Resort, this destination offers a peaceful contrast to the coastal energy of San Felipe. It’s the perfect spot for a midweek adventure or a quiet afternoon picnic.
**A Beauty Born from Ash**
The story of Lake Mapanuepe is as dramatic as its scenery. It wasn’t always here. The lake was formed in the aftermath of the 1991 Mount Pinatubo eruption, when lahar flows blocked the drainage of the Mapanuepe Valley. What remains today is a tranquil body of water framed by rolling hills and lush greenery that feels worlds away from the tropics.
One of the most iconic sights here is the **sunken Boao Church**. Depending on the water level, you might see just the top of its metal cross or the upper structure of the steeple poking through the lake’s surface—a hauntingly beautiful reminder of the town that once stood below.
**What to Do**
The vibe here is 100% chill. The grassy banks are perfect for setting up a camping chair or a picnic mat. The wind is cool, often carrying the scent of pine trees.
* **Boat Rides:** Hire a local boatman to take you closer to the sunken church or across to the other side of the lake.
* **Picture Perfect:** The open pastures and grazing cattle give it that New Zealand aesthetic. It’s a photographer’s dream.
* **Sunset Watching:** The sun dips behind the mountains, painting the sky in soft purples and oranges that reflect perfectly on the still water.

**Getting There from Luna & Sol****
Head south from our resort towards San Marcelino. The drive takes you through rustic barangay roads and eventually onto a lahar trail. While a 4×4 isn’t strictly necessary during the dry season, a vehicle with high clearance is recommended to navigate the rocky river crossings comfortably.
After your adventure, come back home to **Luna & Sol**. Wash off the dust, grab a cold drink at our bar, and share your photos with us. We’d love to see your version of Zambales’ hidden gem!
